NORTHBROOK, Ill., March 16, 2017 — UL is pleased to announce the publication of UL 60335-2-1000, the Standard for Safety for Household and Similar Electrical Appliances: Particular Requirements for Electrically Powered Pool Lifts. It is the first “original” US written Part 2 appliance standard providing safety for chair and single wheelchair swimming pool and spa lifts. The publication of UL 60335-2-1000 as a consensus standard and its adoption by leading stakeholders will help bring safer electrically-operated pool lifts to the market.
This standard deals with the safety and basic performance of electrically powered pool lifts intended for persons requiring assistance for safe entry into and out of a pool or spa. This new standard was developed in response to updates to the 2017 National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70 (Art.680, Part VIII, Electrically Powered Pool Lifts), as well as requests for a specific set of requirements for pool lifts separate from those used as patient lifts in medical applications. Although the majority of the lifts being produced are intended for unassisted operation, the standard allows for lifts with controls only operable from the pool deck area.
The Standard covers the following type of lifts:
- Portable lift chairs
- Stationary lift chairs
- Stationary lifts with wheelchair platforms
- Electric and electromechanical lifts
The requirements reflect those appropriate for fixed installations in public or commercial pools where the installation would be under the scope of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The standard also covers portable units intended for residential use.
Requirements in the standard cover the stability of the unit in simulated pool deck installations. The minimum lifting capacity rating of 300lbs, as well as the construction and dimensional requirements for the lift chair, seat, footrest and arms, reflect the requirements in the Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities Standard, ICC A117.1.
